Interactive Maps for the 41st BMW BERLIN MARATHON
With almost 50,000 participants and more than one million viewers, the BMW BERLIN MARATHON is one of the largest marathon events in the world. All of these people must find their way around, but not with a colorful folding map! An interactive digital map of Berlin was developed for the big run.

In cooperation with their partner, HERE, SCC EVENTS developed an interactive map for the 41st BMW BERLIN MARATHON. The digital route maps were created by bytepark.
The interactive map can be customized via the menu to suit the individual requirements and needs of the user. Participants get detailed information about the route and points of interest. Viewers can find an overview of all the hotspots, the main attractions along the route and all the bands taking part in the music marathon. Berliners and particularly local residents at the edge of the Marathon route get up-to-the-minute information on all closures and related traffic congestion.
All this is in a true-to-scale representation from the route provider, HERE, the map was also supported by mobile devices. In cooperation with SCC EVENTS, bytepark took a bare plan of Berlin city and breathed life into it. In addition to an exact mapping of the marathon route, the bilingual (English, German) map was enriched with lots of information, all made available via a menu.
Depending on the target group, different filter settings could be activated to display only relevant route information. The level-of-detail of the elements presented automatically varies with the zoom level of the interactive map.
On the day of the big race, nothing can go wrong. The runners take one last look at the map and the refreshment stands, the spectators are planning the optimal route to cheer for their favorites. Then it goes to the track.
Thanks to the fluid design nobody has to do without the digital map. On tablet or smartphone the interactive route overview is available at all times so you have the route and all the hotspots at a glance.
Various print maps for leaflets, posters and information booklets were produced in collaboration with HERE based on the digital work created. The specially-developed symbols are now standard icons within the HERE-icon library. Simplistic route plans are now a thing of the past and the BMW BERLIN MARATHON has cartographically correct, true-to-scale, interactive route maps.
